Who doesn’t love pie! As it is March 14, I thought we should put a few pie pictures up in honor of Pi day!
Pies (I am also including tarts in here too) are wonderful means of of showcasing different ingredients. You need to start with a solid foundation – the crust – with many choices from a traditional flaky crust, crushed cookies (like graham or Oreo), or even an actual cookie crust like shortbread. Then you need a filling from sweet to savoury the types of pies are endless: fruits like apple, peach, cherry and saskatoon; custards bases like lemon, pumpkin or banana cream; or various meats like chicken pot pie or beef/pork in a wonderful Tourtiere. Plus you don’t stop there! You can leave it open on top, or cover it with a flaky crust, or perhaps some fancy lattice work, or a more rustic crumble topping. You can also use your standard round pie plate, make free form galettes, pull out your fancy tart pans or improvise with other baking dishes too.
So here are a few pictures of a few pies we made recently, and shared with family and friends.
